Wisbech Town Cricket Club are getting ready for a celebration on Wednesday 22 July when they are set to host a prestigious two-day match at their Harecroft Road ground against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
One Hundred years ago Wisbech Town Cricket Club moved to Harecroft Road from their previous Queen’s Road site and on 28 and 29th April played the MCC for the first time in a two day match which featured one of the greatest cricketers in the history of cricket, Jack Hobbs. Hobbs, the legendary England opening batter, played for Wisbech in that opening fixture. You can read more about this famous day in Wisbech’s cricket history in next week’s Fenland Citizen.
Current Wisbech skipper James Williams is looking forward to this year’s match at Harecroft Road.

“For any club, hosting the MCC is always a special occasion, but for this fixture to reach its 100th year makes it truly unique. It’s a remarkable testament to the relationship that has been built between Wisbech and the MCC over the last century and highlights the tradition and history that both clubs value so highly.
Very few fixtures can boast that kind of longevity, and everyone at Wisbech is incredibly proud to be part of such a significant milestone. We hope it will be a fantastic celebration of the fixture, bringing together past and present players, members, and supporters to recognise its rich history while creating more memories for years to come,” said James.
It’s going to be a special occasion for the club, and they are holding a centenary luncheon for members and guests on the opening day, Wednesday 22 July.
Play is due to start at Harecroft Road on Wednesday at 10.30am with day two, Thursday due to get underway at 11am.
